Violence towards Houses of Worship: A National Crisis

The rise of devastating and targeted mass shootings and acts of violence such as mass shootings continues to generate critical stakeholder concerns across the country. The unfortunate development has increased the feeling and concerns of vulnerability for congregants, parishioners and visitors of holy sites. While institutional administrators and government security agencies scramble to find lasting solutions, the risk of violence threatens to affect the attendance of houses of worship and reduce subscriptions to religious institutions of different faiths. Therefore, there is a need to establish the precise nature of the risk before finding plausible interventions that can be used to address the national crisis.

Violence towards houses of worship extends beyond physical buildings and establishments including direct attacks on unarmed congregants. While arson and stabbings within houses of worship are a serious threat to security, the main form of risk facing houses of worship is exposition to mass shootings as depicted in recent reports. Despite the considerable rise in incidents, the attention garnered toward the threat becomes real when there are casualties involved. The consequent lack of attention and investment in security resources for enhancing the safety of houses of worship extends the risk of actual violence and threats to congregants and parishioners across the country.

Given the contextual risks of violence and hate crimes against houses of worship, special attention is needed to combat the challenge and improve the security situation of religious establishments. As such, direct involvement of security agencies including police departments and private security establishments is required to safeguard the security of houses of worship. Besides, a collaborative and inclusive stakeholder engagement will serve to promote peace and security in houses of worship across the country. In addition, there is a need to implement educational programs targeted at promoting inclusion, religious freedom and tolerance as a violence preventive measure and intervention.
